JD Wetherspoons was granted planning permission in May last year to turn the former cinema in Western Road into a pub.

But 10 months on, there is still plenty of work to do and no opening date has been set for the new branch.

When contacted by the Observer, a spokesman for the company said that Wetherspoons was “still working on the scheme” but reassured residents the chain was “committed to opening a pub in Bexhill.”

The pub, which will be called the Picture Playhouse, received a mixed response from residents when the plans were unveiled.

Some expressed concerns that the new addition would bring noise and exacerbate parking problems in the area.

Others spoke out in support of the application, arguing that the Playhouse Cinema had stood empty for too long.
