PARISH CHURCH NEWS: Sunday evening 26th June sees the next in the Whatlington church series of summer evening services. This month we will be celebrating the Women of the Old Testament, specifically Eve, Sarah, Ruth and not forgetting the Queen of Sheba. There will be well known hymns and readings followed by refreshments and of course a lovely summer evening.

As always we send out our invitation to come and join us at our lovely Grade II* listed church.

PARISH COUNCIL NEWS: Some new people in the village may have notice the blue flag flying last week at the village hall. June 16th is Sussex day and our flag has a blue background with gold Martlet birds.

The flag was started in 2007 in West Sussex with East Sussex joining in 2012.

The date of 16th June was chosen as this is the feast day of the county’s patron saint, St Richard of Chichester. The flag is based on the traditional emblem of Sussex, six gold Martlets on a blue field. This emblem dates back to 1611 when it featured in an atlas by cartographer John Speed, to represent the Kingdom of The South Saxons (Sussex). The emblem is in use by many county-wide organisations including, Sussex County Cricket Club – Sussex County Football Association and the Sussex Wing Air Training Corps. A single Martlet is also the emblem of the Sussex Border Path, a long distance footpath through the beautiful countryside that follows – as near as possible- the boundary of the original county of Sussex, thereby covering the perimeter of both West and East Sussex as well as the mid Sussex link, which follows the border between the two.
