What's in a name ? A 'y' or an 'i'- it depends.....

Why? Because it reached the ears of the editor that Clymping was the genuine spelling. known and loved by residents, embraced by the local parish church and school and found on old signs and inscriptions.

Climping, on the other hand, was a modern interloper, imposed on the village in the 1960's by a bureaucratic council, indifferent to local feeling and tradition.

So Climping was out and Clymping was in. The Gazette had struck a blow for its readership and taken a stand for local distinctiveness against central standardisation.

At first things seemed to pan out, but all was not as it seemed.
