CHILDREN and young people from across Wick revelled in ditching their computer consoles and picking up their water pistols for some good old fashioned, half-term fun.

Dozens of youngsters, aged between five and 16, took part in water pistol fights, arts and crafts and bouncy castle frivolity on Friday (May 31) as part of the May Mayhem youth scheme at The Keystone Centre, in Eldon Way.

The event was organised by the Chilgrove Children and Youth team, an off-shoot of the New Highfields Residents’ Group, and was the first of its kind.

Children from across the Wick area enjoyed the two sessions at the centre, with plenty taking to a water slide and letting the sunshine and scorching temperatures dry out their soggy clothes.

Project manager Ashley Lamb helped to organise the bonanza.

Ashley, a sixth-form student at The Littlehampton Academy, said: “We had brilliant weather for it. Literally, it couldn’t have been much better.

“It was something different for the young people in Wick to do.

“The atmosphere was fun and friendly and I know the children really enjoyed it.

“But what was good was that children and young people, who wouldn’t normally mix together, were actually having fun and engaging with each other.

“That was really nice to see.”

Ashley hinted he hoped to make the event an annual one, following its success. “I think it would be a good thing for Wick’s children and young people,” he said.
