WICK woman Sharon Babbage hopes busting some brow-sweating moves could prove to be a novel way to help a special needs athlete to achieve his dream.

Sharon, of Phoenix Close, will be taking part in a two-hour Zumbathon on Saturday (June 29) to raise cash for Wick boy Jordan Okonta, 15, who hopes to one day become Great Britain’s next Paralympic legend.

Sharon, 34, said she was inspired by Jordan’s courage and determination. He competes in athletics across the country and trains with the Worthing and District Harriers Special Olympics squad.

She said: “Jordan is an inspirational young man. He is very athletic but he needs help in getting him to competitions.

“I thought this would be a great opportunity to use my Zumba as a chance to raise money and support him.”

The event will take place at the Wick Hall, Wick Street, under the supervision of Zumba instructor Dani Heppenstall, from 2-4pm. Admission is £10.

About 60 people are set to attend the class, which looks set to raise somewhere in the region of £500 for the youngster.

However, more support is still needed. Jordan will be taking part in a national competition in Bath, in August. But over the following 12 months he will need to raise around £800 to pay for travel expenses and accommodation fees to take part in the next set of events.

Sharon added: “He has a great potential but just needs help.”
