Wick off-licence fails alcohol test

STAFF AT a Wick off-licence have been fined for selling alcohol to under 18s.

The Mini Market, in Wick Parade, failed a test purchase, organised by Littlehampton police, by selling four cans of cider to a 16-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl.

Two members of staff, who served the pair, were given 80 penalty notices, and the license holder was spoken to by police and licensing authorities.

Sgt Peter Allan, who lead the intelligence-led operation, said the store was one of four tested, but the only one that failed.

"I am really pleased with the operation, and the fact that three out of the four premises passed..

Anti-social link

"It is my hope that the 80 notices issued to the staff and the meeting we had with the DPS (designated premises supervisor) will lead to a

more robust policy in relation to alcohol sales."

He went on to say that the police recognised the link between alcohol and anti-social behaviour and criminality.

"We are working hard to deal with those who sell, purchase and consume alcohol unlawfully, and will continue to do so."

Anyone with information on stores breaking the law in this way is asked to call PC Dave Whitcombe at Bognor Police Station on 0845 60 70 999.
