Climbing adventures: The Literary Society meets this evening (Friday) to hear Dan Richards speak about his travels and climbing exploits across Europe in which he used his great-great-aunt Dorothy's memoirs for a guide. He will be referring to his book '˜Climbing Days', published in June 2016, which describes the trail he took following in the footholds of Dorothy and her husband in the 1930s. The meeting is entitled '˜Adventures, Alps & Aunts' and starts at 7 for 7.30pm in the Lower Court Hall with light refreshments served before the talk begins. If you would like to purchase Climbing Days, signed copies are available at the Rye Bookshop.

Coffee morning: The fundraising Coffee Morning for the Rye Sea Cadets takes place tomorrow, Saturday at 10am in the Court Hall. Mayor John Spencer invites all and the chairman, vice-chairman and Winchelsea Corporation’s Sea Cadet, Jack Brown, will be speaking. Afterwards there will be light refreshments, a raffle and an auction is planned.

Wesley Chapel talk: Tomorrow (Saturday) February 18th Edward Preston, local historian and church minister, will be talking on ‘Non Conformity’ at the Wesley Chapel. All are invited to come along and find out more about this intriguing subject. There will be light refreshments on arrival at 10am with the talk beginning at 10.30am.

FOAM Quiz: The Friends of the Ancient Monuments have organised another fun quiz evening which will be on Saturday February 25th at 6.30 for 7pm in the New Hall. A buffet supper is included in the cost of £10 p.p. and there will be a cash bar. Teams of a maximum of 6 people are invited to participate but individuals are also welcome and will be put with suitable partners on the night. Women’s Day of Prayer: This year the Women’s World Day of Prayer is on Friday March 3rd at 10.30am in Rye Baptist Church. The theme is ‘Am I being unfair to you?’ and prayers will be for the Philippines. All are welcome, friends and families and there will be refreshments after the service.

Fécamp Abbey visit: In the middle ages conflict over territory was prevalent between France and Britain but more recently Rye has established a new relationship with Fécamp in Northern France. Canon Richard Orchard who ministers at St Thomas’ Church has arranged exchange visits and there is the chance of a few Winchelsea residents visiting Fécamp Abbey from Friday 23rd to Monday 26th June. The only cost is the journey (plus a gift) and if you are interested please contact Richard on 01797 225916. Fécamp Abbey once owned parts of Sussex including Rye, Winchelsea and Hastings which was given to the same abbey by King Cnut during his reign between 1016 and 1035. The abbey was one of the first pilgrimage sites in Normandy and from the 11th century Benedictine monks settled there and it is claimed they produced the brandy-based herbal liqueur called Benedictine. However, it appears that a certain Alexandre Le Grand from Fécamp invented the recipe in the 1930s and connected the liqueur to the abbey history to increase sales.

Bingo rules: The Winchelsea Beach Community Association hold fortnightly evenings of Bingo in the Community Hall. The next session is on Wednesday February 22nd with doors open at 7 for eyes down at 7.15pm. Bingo rules involve a player being over 16 years of age and he or she must be a member to play for the major Jackpot. Children are welcome with adults and light refreshments plus a raffle will be available during the evening.

Singing for breathing: ‘Free Singing for Better Breathing Groups’ will be held at the Community Hall on Mondays for 12 weeks from 11am to 12pm starting on March 6th. To find out more and book your place please contact 01303 220870 or [email protected]. Through regular singing within a friendly relaxed group this can help with managing such conditions as asthma, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and other lung disorders. Singing is recommended by the British Lung Foundation. The sessions are led by Sadie Hurley who has run many singing groups in Kent and South London for people affected by breathing problems.
