Remembrance services: The Act of Remembrance for Armistice Day will be at 11am today (Friday) when there will be a period of silence and prayer, by the War Memorial at St Thomas' Church, given by the Rector. Then as now we celebrate through prayer remembering that soldiers were strengthened by Bible verses such as '˜take unto you the the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day' (Ephesians 6:13) which were given to them by army chaplains before going into battle. On Sunday November 13th parishioners are invited to attend the 2 minutes' silence and wreath laying ceremony at the War Memorial for 11am. After which all will proceed to the church for a non-denominational service of Remembrance with the Mayor John Spencer and Corporation.

Fabric workshop: A fabric-based workshop making seasonal decorations and gifts takes place today Friday from 10.30am till 4.30pm at Icklesham Village Hall (contact 01797 223042) The cost is £30 p.p. and you will need to bring fabrics, sewing kit, lace, felt, buttons etc. and a packed lunch.

Ian’s sabbatical: The Wesley Chapel will be open tomorrow, Saturday November 12th, for Rev. Ian Pruden’s talk on ‘Strolling through my Sabbatical’. Ian is the Chapel Chairman and in his talk he will be recounting the 3 months he spent earlier in the year in the Shetland Islands. All are most welcome and light refreshments will be served from 10am ready for a 10.30 start.

Festive Fair tomorrow: All are invited to the Festive Fair tomorrow (Saturday) in the New Hall from 10am till 3pm. There will be plenty of stalls selling jewellery, children’s clothes, glass, pottery, cards, local produce including wine tasting plus more. Also super prizes to be won on the tombola and raffle. Refreshments will be served throughout the day and all proceeds will go towards the restoration of the New Hall.

E.F. Benson: The next Winchelsea Literary Society meeting is on Friday November 18th when Allan Downend (former director of Rye Museum) will be talking about ‘The Life & Work of E. F. Benson’. Edward Frederic Benson was the Mayor of Rye from 1932 and lived in Lamb House for almost 20 years. A well-known novelist he wrote the popular Mapp and Lucia series which was adapted for television and filmed in Rye. He died in 1940 which was also the year in which the Garden Room was bombed, where the fictional Mapp and Lucia would spy on the activities of their neighbours. The venue, as usual, is the Lower Court Hall, and the talk starts at 7:30pm, with refreshments available from 7pm.

Playing Bingo: Guaranteed jackpots every fortnight with Cash Bingo and the next event is on Wednesday November 16th at 7 for 7.15pm in the Community Hall. Online Bingo which is played with a group of others over the internet is considered a communal experience. Even so facing a screen is no comparison to playing Bingo with friends and families over hot drinks on a cold November night. Everybody welcome and there will be light refreshments and a raffle.

Wild Flowers: The Friends of Rye Harbour Nature Reserve invite all to the next Winter Talk series which is on Saturday November 19th at 2.30pm in the Community Hall. Jenny and John Willsher are experts in botany and ornithology and they will be talking about some of the 1700 species of wild flowers on the Greek island of Crete of which 10% are widespread. As usual donations towards the Reserve are greatly appreciated.

Fellowship Lunch: The next one of these popular Lunches is on Friday November 25th at 12 for 12.30pm in the Community Hall. Booking is essential by contacting 01797 227168 as the caterers need to know numbers. The lunches consist of a variety of home-made dishes and there is usually a speaker. During the evening there will be a request for donations which will be gratefully received towards a specific charity.
