History talk: It is this Saturday October 10th that Dr John Crook, Consultant Archaeologist to Winchester Cathedral will be sharing his expertise on Cults and Shrines in St Thomas’ Church. The talk is organised by the Archaeological Society and begins at 3pm and the cost is £4 non-members with proceeds in aid of WAS. Dr Crook’s interest lies in a chronological approach of different manifestations of cults and shrines as these were shaped by changing circumstances.

Newcomers: If you have been a resident of Winchelsea for the last 2 years and will be attending St Thomas’ Church this Sunday October 11th you are invited to an ‘Open House’ by courtesy of the Winchelsea Corporation. The social gathering will take place after the10.30am service in the Court Hall and Museum which will be open from 11.30 am till 1pm for tea, coffee, wine and soft drinks.

Friends AGM: The Friends of Rye, Winchelsea & District Memorial Hospital are having their Annual General Meeting on Tuesday October 13th in the Reception area of the Hospital. If you wish to attend it is open to all so do bring a friend. After the meeting there is opportunity to celebrate the official opening of the new reception centre. The Hospital which is situated in Playden and overlooks Rye, provides inpatient and outpatient services as well as facilities to accommodate patients with continuing care requirements

Sussex Artists: On Wednesday October 14th the Second Wednesday Society are meeting at 2.30pm in the New Hall to listen to a talk entitled ‘Inspired by Sussex’. The talk, given by Corinne Farmer of Eastbourne’s Towner Art Gallery, concerns its collection of works by artists who lived and painted in Sussex. Forty-four artists from across East Sussex were selected to exhibit their work at the Towner Gallery’s prestigious regional art exhibition this summer, from a record number of entries and submissions. As usual the cost is £1 members, £4 non-members and includes a delicious home-made tea which follows the talk.

An Inspector Calls: When the Literary Society next meets on Friday October 16th members will come together for a read-through of J.B. Priestley’s classic play ‘An Inspector Calls’. Lorna Challand will be allocating parts and the meeting begins at 7 for 7.30pm in the Lower court Hall. The play continues to have relevance in our times and is a mainstay on the current GCSE syllabus, so with Lorna’s English teaching background we can anticipate a rousing performance. Non-members are welcome to come and listen and light refreshments will be at hand.

Quiz Night: The New Hall will be open for a Quiz Night on Saturday October 17th and entry time is 6.30pm. Teams of up to 6 players are required so friends and neighbours are all welcome and please bring your own drinks. The cost per ticket is £8.50 which includes a sausage supper and the funds raised are in aid of Rye, Winchelsea & District Memorial Hospital.

Migration watch: An Autumn Migration Watch around the Nature Reserve has been arranged for tomorrow (Saturday) meeting at 9am by Brede Lock to be finished by 12 noon. You do not need to book but donations would be appreciated. The walk is approximately 3 miles accompanied by the warden while stealthily looking out for warblers hidden in the bushes, waders basking on the islands and wagtails disappearing overhead as they prepare for their journey south towards Africa.

Halloween Dance: Time is moving ever closer to that sinister night of cobwebs, pumpkins, green fangs and things that go bump. For those wishing to celebrate tickets are now on sale for the Halloween Dance on Saturday October 24th in the Community Hall from 7.30 to 10.30pm. The 60’s Rock n Roll band Ricochet will be providing live entertainment and the £10 includes a fish and chip supper. You can purchase your tickets from Hugh at Suttons in Sea Road or on 01797 224820 and proceeds from the event will go towards the Winchelsea Beach Community Association and St Michaels’s Hospice.

Fellowship Lunch: The last Friday in the month is set aside for the Fellowship Lunch in the Community Hall on October 30th. As its name suggests it is a time for fellowship and coming together to enjoy a well-cooked lunch consisting of several different dishes and there is usually a speaker to round it off. The lunch begins at 12 for 12.30pm and booking is necessary for numbers by contacting 01797 227168. There are no costs but there will be a request for donations towards a charity for the month.
