Art Exhibition: The very popular Winchelsea Annual Art Exhibition will take place in the Court Hall from Saturday to Monday, August 23rd to 25th. The opening hours are from 10am to 6pm on August 23rd and 24th and 10am to 3.45pm on the 25th. Paintings, photographs and pottery by local artists will be exhibited for viewing and for sale; do come and see. Admission to the exhibition is free and there are excellent Raffle Prizes to be won. The proceeds will go towards the upkeep and refurbishment of the Town’s Millennium Artefacts which includes the town sign, beacon and tapestry.

Hog Roast: This year’s annual Hog Roast will be held on August 23rd in the New Hall beginning at 7 for 7.30pm. To ensure your place the number to contact is 01797 224446 to speak to members of the Bonfire Boyes.

Cellar Tours: The Friends of the Ancient Monuments are running Cellar Tours on the weekend of August 23rd and 24th at 11 am. Bookings can be arranged at winchelseacellars.com. Also on August 24th Winchelsea Archaeological Society will be holding a tour at 2pm and they can be contacted on Winchelsea.net/tours. The tours cost £5 p.p. and last 90 minutes; bring a torch, also guide books are provided.

WW1 Remembrance, from the Winchelsea Flyer: An act of remembrance was held at the War Memorial at sunset on Monday August 4th at which a bugler played the Last Post to signal the start of a two-minute silence and Reveille to signal the end. This act of remembrance will be repeated on the anniversary of the death of each of the men named on the War Memorial. Monday was to commemorate the declaration of war and Edward Watson, whose date of death is not known. A wreath was laid in honour of Edward by a long-time resident and the Rector Robin Whitehead officiated. The bugler was a member of Sussex Brass and this was arranged, along with the wreath, by Winchelsea Bonfire Boyes. The Last Post will next be played on Saturday January 24th 2015 to commemorate Basil Lees Inderwick, a Canadian who died in Winchelsea of meningitis. He is not on the War Memorial but is buried in the churchyard of St Thomas’ Church. Monday’s act of remembrance was followed by a vigil in the Church, which took the form of prayers, readings and music. Many households went home after the vigil to take part in the British Legion’s “Lights Out” event.

Winchelsea Neighbourhood Watch: Winchelsea has a new PCSO, Sharon Eldridge and she will be covering Eastern Rother which includes: Winchelsea, Winchelsea Beach, Icklesham and Rye Harbour. Always feel free to talk to your local PCSO about specific issues or general concerns. Whatever the issue the PCSO is happy to hear from you and can be contacted via the Sussex Police website or by calling 101.

Table Sale: On Saturday August 23rd at 11am there will be a Table Sale, the last for this season, in the Community Hall at Winchelsea Beach. As usual please contact 01797 224820 to book a table. A tombola will be available with good prizes and entrance cost is 40p which includes tea and biscuits.

Joan’s Abseil: Joan Phillips who is a member of St Richard’s Church, Winchelsea Beach, will jump off a cliff at Peacehaven in aid of Family Support Work. She will be undertaking this escapade on Saturday September 20th following a series of training activities. If you would like to sponsor Joan who really deserves the support please sign the sponsor form which is available in all three churches: St Richard’s, St Thomas’ and St Nicholas Icklesham. There is also a box at the Back of St Thomas’ Church for non-cash donations to FSW.
