Winchelsea Speaker’s Day

Mayors from across the Cinque Ports towns gathered in Winchelsea on a bright Saturday morning at the invitation of the Speaker of the Cinque Ports, the Mayor of Winchelsea to celebrate Speaker’s Day.

Attending were a host of Cinque Ports dignitaries assembled in Winchelsea, along with the Lord Warden, Admiral the Lord Boyce.

The day commenced when the Lord Warden, accompanied by Mayor Roger Neaves, the Sergeant-at-Admiralty and 2 Lord Warden Cadets marched to inspect the assembled Rye Sea Cadets and the New Romney Sea Cadets Band. Immediately following the inspection at the Grand Procession around Winchelsea commenced, led off by the New Romney Band, followed by the Rye Cadets and then our principal guest of honour Admiral the Lord Boyce with Lady Boyce, the Speaker and his wife. Following behind in great pomp were all the Mayors of the Ports each attended, in full regalia, by their clerks and mace bearers – a grand total of over 130 including the band .

At the Church of St Thomas the Speaker’s Day service was held, after which luncheon was held in the New Hall. At the luncheon a special presentation of a Confederation Shield was made by the Lord Warden to the Town Clerk of Winchelsea, Malcolm Pratt, who has served 28 years in post.
