This will be at the usual time of 10.30 am to 12.00 with all that is on offer: home-baked and grown produce, coffee, tea and good company. The Market is also to include a Horticulture Stall with plants priced from £1.50 and you can buy or swap a plant, donate plants, seeds and pots. Last month’s Church Market did well in raising £277 for church funds and thank you to all who supported it any way.

A Cellar Tour has been arranged by Winchelsea Archaeological Society for Saturday 4th August beginning at 2 pm from Castle Street. The cost is £5 per person and lasts for about 90 minutes and the funds are in aid of archaeology in Winchelsea. The number to contact is 01797 225333 to book your tickets.

This Sunday 5th August will be the Revd Canon Howard Cocks’ last service at St Thomas’ before he leaves the ministry. We are grateful for his commitment to the role and service to the community and wish him well for an enjoyable retirement in London. He will no doubt be kept busy using the theatre tickets which were part of his leaving presents but Howard also plans to make trips back to Winchelsea. Amongst the number of events he will be conducting and attending over the year there will be two weddings, the Heritage Open Days weekend and Speaker’s Day. Revd Howard’s Farewell Service will be the 10.30 am Choral Eucharist at St Thomas’ Church and later that day at 12 midnight he ceases to be Rector.

Winchelsea Moving Pictures is showing Hugo on Monday 6th August in the New Hall at 7 for 7.30 pm. The film is set in 1930s Paris about an orphan who lives in the walls of a train station and his quest concerns a mystery involving his father. It was directed by Martin Scorsese in 2011 and stars Asa Butterfield and Christopher Lee.

There will be a visit from the Mobile Library on Wednesday 8th August to Castle Street. As usual it will be from 1.40 to 2.10 pm.

The Literary Society is holding its annual party which is hosted by Committee member Tina Alexander. This event will be at her address on Friday evening 10th August.

The Winchelsea Book Fair 2012 is coming soon on Friday and Saturday 24th & 25th August to the New Hall, between 10 am and 5 pm. Books you no longer want are needed for the Fair and if you have any good quality second hand paperback and hardback books and related materials (picture, posters, postcards, maps) bring them to the New Hall on Sunday 19th August or Monday 20th August any time after 10 am. Almost any subject is of interest and children’s books and antiquarian items are especially welcome. However please do not donate encyclopaedias or magazines. In 2010 the Book Fair raised £5000 for our local hospital in Rye and other local and national charities. This year the supported charities are: The Rye, Winchelsea & District Memorial Hospital, Macmillan Cancer Support, Friends of the Ancient Monuments and Museum and the Winchelsea New Hall Society.

Jempson’s at Peasmarsh have recently amended the Shopper Bus service timetable and I am passing the information on to you. This service runs through Winchelsea every Friday at 9 am calling at the Bridge Inn and then Winchelsea Beach at 9.45 am that morning. The bus will conveniently stop anywhere it is safe to do so along its route and a return fare is only £1.
