Winter wildlife wonders at Arundel Wetland Centre

THE cold winter months have brought a stunning array of wildlife to the Arundel Wetland Centre.

Throughout December, visitors and staff at the site, in Mill Road, have been marvelling at the sight of a stunning 
starling murmuration at dusk.

The centre has also been home to a flock of 32 Bewick’s swans, as well as an elusive bittern that has been roosting in the grounds.

Paul Stevens, grounds manager, said: “We don’t get the starlings displaying every year and usually the Bewick’s swans come in only a couple of evenings each winter. This winter, to have lots of both plus a bittern in the reed bed is adding to the excitement.”

The mornings are also a great time to see the large number of wildfowl that are staying overnight at the attraction.

Arundel Wetland Centre manager Dave Fairlamb said: “In the mornings, from the hides on the tranquil trail, you can see grey herons and kingfishers catching their breakfast alongside wading snipe, water rail and lapwing.”

Staff are encouraging visitors to pop in extra early during national breakfast week, between January 25 and 31, when the centre opens at 8am.
