Wisborough Green charity working to combat trafficking

Founders, Sarah and Stephen Nunn, started Divine SCRIPT with the hope to help and support women in India that have been victims of trafficking and prostitution.

The organisation, which stands for Securing Childhood, Restoring Innocence, Preventing Trafficking, employs ladies and provides them with the opportunity to make items, such as belts, bags, jewellery and cards.

Since its launch in 2011, the couple have opened a charity shop in Wisborough Green selling the items that have been handmade by its employees in India.

Sarah said: “We buy everything that our ladies make and then the shop subsidises that.

“People also bring us donations to sell, so it means that they are not then dependent on us selling their products for them to get money.”

The charity came about after the couple saw a documentary by television personality Paul Merton. It followed a charity in India that looks after children and women who have been the subject of human trafficking.

Sarah added: “My husband thought it was something that we needed to learn more about, so he booked a ticket to India and met up with the charity that had been on this TV programme.

“Through that we met the lady that we now work with (Mahua Sur Ray), who was keen to work with a smaller organisation.”

Divine Script send £3,500 worth of donations to India every month which is the amount that is needed to run the charity abroad.

Mahua, who is director of the organisation, manages the funds that are sent from the charity shop in Wisborough Green.

She will visit next month to share how the money is spent, to see the effect of local donations and to preview some of the new products that have been made.

Sarah said: “We also have a sponsorship programme where some of the children are now going to school, so we have to pay for the schooling.”

Through their charity, the couple have also set up a working girls shelter for girls that have been able to get a job, after being a resident at a brothel since birth.

The shelter aims to provide a safe place to live and reduce the risk of second generation prostitution.

In the future, Sarah and her husband hope to move the charity to India to reduce the cost of shipping overseas.

The event will take place at the St Peter ad Vincula Church in Wisborough Green, on September 23 from 7.30pm.
