Woman injured by 'hit-and-run' buggy

A PENSIONER has been left practically housebound after she became the victim of a hit-and-run with a disabled buggy.

Freda Hammond, 85, was left with a possible hairline fracture to her pelvis and bruises when she was knocked down by a buggy along Goring Road '” but instead of stopping, the driver of the buggy drove off, leaving her on the pavement.

And because of her injuries, Mrs Hammond, a very independent woman, can no longer get out of her house without being pushed in a wheelchair.

Mrs Hammond, of Elm Grove, said: "The driver must have known they hit me, but they didn't stop. These buggies can be a menace on the pavement and they should slow down."

Mrs Hammond had come out of a greengrocers in Goring Road at about 11.30am on Friday, April 15, when she was knocked down and left on the pavement, along with her shopping. Luckily, she saw a friend out shopping, who helped her home, and she was later taken to Worthing Hospital.

Mrs Hammond spent nearly 30 years as a lollipop lady near Elm Grove First School and never once got hit by a car.

Mrs Hammond's daughter, Lesley Jay, also of Elm Grove, said: "This has knocked her confidence for six.

"She has always been independent, but she can only go out now if we push her in her wheelchair.

"I understand people need buggies, but I wish they would go slower and be more careful."
