A cyclist stuck in the mud at Pagham Nature Reserve sparked a rescue mission involving firefighters and a Coastguard helicopter yesterday evening (Sunday, May 24).

Emergency services were called to Sussex beauty spot just before 7pm after reports of an injured woman stuck in the mud, after she had fallen from her bike down the bank.

A crew from Bognor Regis Fire Station was mobilised to the scene along with an off-road vehicle, and the Heavy Rescue Tender from Chichester, the fire service said.

A spokesperson for West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service said: “Firefighters worked closely with officers from Selsey Coastguard as well as paramedics from SECAmb to rescue the woman."

The woman was taken to St Richard's Hospital in Chichester after she was pulled from the mud and given treatment and pain relief by paramedics.

A spokesperson for Selsey Coastguard Rescue Team said: "The team decided due to the location of the casualty it would be easier for the casualty to be taken to hospital by Coastguard Helicopter.

"Coastguard Helicopter Rescue 175 arrived on scene and the casualty was then transferred to the helicopter via stretcher."

The fire service confirmed crews had left the scene by 9pm.
