The identity of neither the suspect nor the dead victim had been released by the police before the Observer went to print.

The killing has left people who live and work nearby appalled.

Nyewood Lane resident Ken Scutt said: "It's absolutely dreadful that someone has been stabbed to death nearby.

"I've lived in Nyewood Lane since 1965 and this is the first time anything like this has happened in this part of the town.

"That part of Nyewood Lane, especially around Normanton Avenue, is a very quiet residential area usually.

"I am absolutely dismayed that this stabbing has happened there. It's a real shock."

Sue English, the manager of Normanton Lodge Nursing Home said: "I am shocked by this news. It has horrified me and has upset some of the residents here who have found out about it.

"You just don't expect something like this to occur on your doorstep in Bognor.

"This is a very quiet avenue and we don't have any noise at our end of the road at all.

"The only activity we usually get is when football fans park their cars here for matches at the football ground."

It was just after 3pm on Tuesday that the police and ambulance services were called to Normanton Avenue.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "Members of the public reported that two women were being attacked outside an address at that location."

A 24-year-old woman was found with serious stab wounds by members of the emergency services.

She was taken by ambulance to St Richard's Hospital in Chichester where doctors were unable to save her life and she was declared dead.

The other woman involved in the attack is not thought to have been seriously injured. She is not known to have needed hospital treatment.

It is believed the incident is linked to a domestic dispute rather than being an attack which involved strangers.

Police have set up Operaton Ryton to investigate the deadly attack.

They have appealed for witnesses to the incident to contact them on 0845 60 70 999 or Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
