Work starts on Ore Valley community centre

RESIDENTS of Ore Valley will see the first physical signs of the area's regeneration next week when builders start work to transform the Priory Neighbourhood Centre (PNC) into a state-of-the-art community centre.

Plans for the centre reveal a comprehensive interior including an internet caf, a crche, offices and a multi-purpose space. The roof of the PNC will include special solar panels to help heat the building and produce electricity that will reduce energy consumption.

It is hoped the PNC will be ready for community use in about a year's time.

The long-awaited project is being paid for with a grant of more than 1million from national regeneration agency, English Partnerships.

The group said this week that it would ensure the building meets the highest design standards and provides quality services for local people.

Council leader Jeremy Birch said "The rebuilding of the Priory Neighbourhood Centre will be a major asset to the residents of Farley Bank, Halton and Mount Pleasant and will be an early sign of the revival of Ore Valley through the Millennium Community Programme."

The PNC was bought by local regeneration group SureStart Ore Valley and has been held by the Hastings Trust on behalf of the community since March 2002.

English Partnerships announced funding for the building in February. Contributions to the redevelopment have also been made by the European Regional Development Fund and SureStart Ore Valley.

The 67 hectare Ore Valley site is part of Hastings Millennium Community, one of seven Millennium Communities managed by English Partnerships across England.
