Work to start in A272

WORK has started on a range of safety schemes for the A272 between Billingshurst and Hampshire.

The works are being broken down into five sites to minimise disruption.

The improvements will take place along the following sections and will include:

A272 Section 1: Hampshire Boundary to Midhurst

Upgraded warning signs along the route

Improved signs warning of width restrictions on side roads along the route

Improvements to speed limit signs within 30mph and 40mph zones

Upgraded direction signs for junctions between Trotton and Midhurst

Improvements to chevron signs on bends at Trotton

Application of high friction surfacing at Iping Crossroads, School Lane junction and the Woolbeding road junction to reduce skidding

Changes to road markings along the route

Provision of traffic islands at Stedham Crossroads

Improvements to signs, particularly the 'School' warning signs in Petersfield Road and North Street

Repainting of road markings in Petersfield Road

Upgraded 30mph speed limit signs in Petersfield Road

Application of high friction surfacing at North Street mini-roundabout to reduce skidding

Upgraded direction signs for the North Street mini-roundabout

A272 Section 3: Midhurst to Petworth

Upgraded warning signs along the route

Putting in 'pedestrians crossing' signs near Easebourne playground

Installation of verge marker posts on the more severe bends along the route

Upgraded speed limit signs at Easebourne 30mph zone

Upgraded warning signs on all dual carriageway sections along the route

Application of high friction surfacing at the South Ambersham road junction and on bend in Tillington to reduce skidding

A272 Section 4: Petworth

Application of high friction surfacing on approaches to the Pound Street and North Street mini-roundabouts to reduce skidding

A272 Section 5: Petworth to Billingshurst

Upgraded warning signs along the route

Installation of verge marker posts on the more severe bends along the route

Application of high friction surfacing at Foxhill and Crimbourne Lane crossroad junctions to reduce skidding

Improved signs warning of width restrictions on side road along the route

Installation of chevron signs on bends at Wakestone Lane junction and east of Crimbourne Lane crossroad junction

Application of high friction surfacing on New Bridge and its approaches to reduce skidding

Derek Whittington, West Sussex County Council's Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning and Transport, said: "In three years up to the end of June 2008, there were 97 accidents along these routes, which resulted in 129 casualties. That is why this work is needed and we are investing so heavily in it."

The scheme will take four months to complete, weather permitting.

During the works, traffic control will be used at various times. This will on occasions involve temporary road closures for short spells. Temporary signs will be put out prior to the closures to warn motorists.
