Worship group nominated for environmental award

BEXHILL-based alternative worship group "the hill" have been short-listed for a national award to recognise their work in raising awareness of environmental issues.

The winners of the Green Church Awards will be announced at a ceremony in London on Monday, November 19.

The hill has been nominated for its innovative and engaging services, which have confronted the issues facing God's creation using art installations, music and reflection.

Previous events, boldly titled "rubbish" and "substance abuse" have dealt with our wasteful nature and the scarcity of water respectively.

The next event will see St Peter's come down the hill to engage in some Christmas shopping. "Retail therapy" on Friday, December 7 will coincide with Bexhill's Christmas late-night shopping promotion.

A spokesman said: "Budding Bexhill shoppers of all ages are invited to join us on our trudge through the snow-covered streets of Bexhill (don't you just wish) as we seek the meaning of shopping. Starting and finishing at 'C-Side', a clutch of local businesses have already agreed to host a series of installations to be found along the way.

Jim Truscott, one of the leaders of the hill said: "Being nominated for the Church Times Green Churches Award is really encouraging for us as we are a relatively new movement and reflects our desire to engage the wider community in facing these important and urgent issues."

The hill was set up by members of St Peter's Church in 2007 to explore alternative forms of worship. They aim to create different kinds of services that will stimulate the wider community to engage with the issues of relevance to our time.
