Worthing Birdman cancelled

THE first Worthing Birdman event was called off following severe gales and high tides.

Organisers cancelled day two of Worthing's first birdman event (Sunday, July 6) after a combination of gale force eight winds and a high tide of 6.5metres meant it was unsafe to go ahead.

Around ten serious flyers - who successfully took to the skies on Saturday (July 5) in day one of the event - and 24 fun flyers were expected to take the plunge 35ft off Worthing pier.

The bad weather conditions also meant that Worthing pier was closed for the day.

The event was switched from its home of the past 29 years on Bognor Pier after the structure was shortened for safety reasons in April.

This cast doubts about whether the new perch for the competitors gave them enough water in which to jump without injury.
