Worthing chip shop owner fights off would-be robber

A FISH and chip shop owner used a snooker cue to beat off a man who broke into his business and claimed to have a knife.

The would-be thief broke into shop at around 3.10am on Friday, January 30, which woke the owner who lives in the flat above.

The owner went downstairs and saw the man standing inside the shop, in Upper Brighton Road, Worthing.

The intruder then said he had a knife and threatened to stab the owner.

Sergeant Ian Kerr, of Worthing police, said the pair were then involved in a struggle, during which the shop owner managed to grab a snooker cue and hit the man "around the body" with it.

Sgt Kerr said the offender then ran off and got into the passenger side of a dark blue car, possibly a Mercedes.

A man, in his 30s, has since been arrested in connection with the incident and is helping police with their enquiries.
