Worthing man's four-day ride home from Edinburgh

WORTHING'S "one gear, no brain" cyclist, Gordon Brooks, has proved that all his mental and physical cogs are in the right place with a magnificent charity ride.

Gordon, aged 20, from Southwold Close, High Salvington, took only four days to ride the 500 miles from Edinburgh to Worthing on a single-speed mountain bike.

His task helped raise more than 1,250 for Chestnut Tree House children's hospice.

Although Gordon expected to take six or seven days to get back home, he set a cracking pace from the start, with only a few rest stops.

And in addition to himself, there was the bike's weight in luggage on the back.

On the final day Gordon rode 190 miles from Melton Mowbray to Worthing in under 16 hours, and workmates, friends and family were waiting to greet him at 11.15pm.

Gordon, who branded himself "one gear, no brain", said before his marathon effort: "It was an idea I came up with ages ago.

"I just booked a one-way plane ticket to Scotland and got some friends to sponsor me, and that was that, really."

He said afterwards that other plane passengers had watched in amazement as he hoisted his bike box off Edinburgh Airport's baggage carousel and assembled his cycle there and then.

And off he went...
