Worthing man's theft was symptom of grief

A FATHER of two who lost his "moral compass" when his wife suddenly died. pleaded guilty to shoplifting.

Stephen Cass, 49, of Downe Walk, Worthing, admitted stealing 23 audio books costing more than 345 from WHSmith, in South Street, on Wednesday, November 11.

The audio books were later recovered from his home.

Worthing Magistrates' Court heard Cass had been left floundering after his wife suddenly died from cancer in 2005, leaving him homeless and having to fend for his two children, 12 and 15.

The court also heard Cass already had a conditional discharge for a previous offence.

Magistrate Keith Bushby gave Cass a two-year conditional discharge, describing him as a "perpetual thief" who had to stop.
