Worthing peace protest stops traffic

ANTI-WAR protesters caused traffic chaos when they performed a sit-down protest on one of the main roads into Worthing.

Around 120 people marched through the town as part of an anti-war gathering, which started outside the Guildbourne Centre.

The protesters, who were creating a tremendous noise with drums and whistles, walked from the shopping precinct to the bottom of Broadwater Bridge, where they sat on the roundabout and surrounding road.

Police had to divert irate drivers back up Broadwater Road to stop congestion forming.

After police had set up diversions for traffic in each direction, the protesters moved back down Chapel Road to sit on the roundabout at the top of North Street.

They then repeated this on the The Broadway and at the South Street roundabout.

Some of the protesters then entered McDonald's, Liverpool Road, on their way back to the Guildbourne Centre.

Dr Mohammed Burghli, who has moved to Worthing from just outside Iran, joined the march with his wife and son.

Dr Burghli addressed the crowd outside the Pavilion Theatre to thank them for their support.

Speaking to the Herald, he said: "I was very surprised to find there was a group called Worthing Against War.

"I have been to some of the meetings and found I was the only foreigner. It was a very reassuring thing to know they all care."
