The seafront planting competition, organised by Worthing Town Centre Initiative, saw the 36 flowerbeds between Splash Point and the Lido allocated to charities, community groups and businesses.

Volunteers planted up the beds earlier this year and have been maintaining them all through the summer.

All those involved were invited to an afternoon tea at Food restaurant, in New Street, Worthing, on Tuesday, when the winners were announced.

English Martyrs Catholic Primary School won first prize of £500, West Worthing Rotary Club was second and won £200, and 1st Durrington Rainbows won £100 for third place.

Judges Andy Edwards, Worthing Borough Council’s head of environment, and Worthing town crier Bob Smytherman said they found the job very difficult due to the creativity and visual appeal of the flowerbeds this year.

Sharon Clarke, Worthing town centre manager, said: “The seafront has been ablaze with colour thanks to the efforts of all those involved.”
