Worthing wildlife garden open day

WONDERS of a wildlife garden in Worthing were shared with visitors at the annual open day.

Birds, bees, bugs and butterflies abound in the heart of Broadwater, at the Cortis Avenue Wildlife Garden, off Carnegie Road.

Visitors were able to view the wild meadow, edible hedgerows, heritage orchard and wildlife ponds during the open day on Saturday.

Sussex Wildlife Trust’s Wild About Worthing team helped organise a bug hunt for children, while garden volunteers gave talks on how to make a wildlife garden.

Nathalie Hadjifotiou, from the garden team, said: “It went very well. We had about 40 people visit, ten of them children, and they were people who would not normally visit the garden.

“We delivered a lot of leaflets in the area and particularly targeted the Worthing Homes properties that overlook the garden.

“People who had seen it years ago were surprised how beautiful it was looking, with the flowers and grasses. The ponds were a bit dry but there were still water lilies and dragonflies.

“The children took part in the bug hunt and other people were just enjoying the peace and calm of the meadow.”

Included in the garden is a range of berries for birds to eat and six heritage Sussex apple trees, which were planted to develop a small orchard in the garden.

Cortis Avenue Wildlife Garden is a voluntary organisation, licensed by Worthing Homes to manage the site.
