WW2 German flare sparks explosion fears

A ‘live’ war relic unearthed by a woman turning out her grandfather’s shed led to a bomb alert in a Haywards Heath suburb.

Sussex Police have now disclosed that their officers were called after the woman found a World War Two device in her grandfather’s shed in Bolnore Road, Haywards Heath, just after midday on Tuesday (2 April).

The Mid Sussex Times reported the outline of the incident earlier this week after Haywards Heath Police ‘tweeted’ this picture of the Royal Logistic Corps vehicle nearby on the Twitter social network site.

Sussex Police headquarters have now said that the device was a fuse from a flare dropped by a German aircraft over Plymouth in 1941.

The Royal Logistic Corps Bomb Disposal team was called and the devise was confirmed as potentially ‘live’.

However, the bomb disposal unit was were unable to carry out a controlled explosion because it was too dark.

The following day, Wednesday (3 April), just before midday a controlled explosion was possible and was carried out without further incident, Sussex Police said.
