Yobs hurl lumps of concrete at houses

The missile was thrown at the double-glazed unit of a house in Larch Close.

It was hurled so forcefully it left an impression on the outer layer of glass though it stayed intact despite the strength of the impact.

The lump was one of three which were aimed at neighbouring homes in the cul-de-sac on the Trees estate.

One damaged the back garden fence of Sylvia Olliver, a district councillor for the area.

She took the pieces of concrete, the biggest of which was about seven inches by five inches, to Bersted Parish Council's latest meeting.

"This piece was embedded in my fence with such a velocity that it was stuck in it," she said as she held up the lump.

"It left a gaping hole when I took it out. It is frightening to think about what could have happened if it had gone over the fence.

"You wonder what could have happened to us if either me or my husband had been out there.

"If we had been hit, we could have been killed.

"Our dog goes out in our garden and she could have been killed."

The vandalism occurred at about 7pm one midweek evening earlier this month.

She and her neighbour, whose window was damaged, rushed out into their gardens when they heard the thuds of the concrete hitting their

targets.

But the culprits had disappeared. A search of the area revealed a cache of lumps of concrete by the garages in neighbouring Stoneage Close.

Her neighbour removed the weapons.

Mrs Olliver said the fact youngsters could climb on to the roofs of the garages in Stoneage Close gave them a vantage point from which to hurl their missiles.
