Young try out pavement art

Artistic children turned Bognor Regis promenade into a giant canvas.

The 17 youngsters braved the elements on a breezy afternoon to take part in the young pavement artist competition around the seafront bandstand.

They used chalk to draw a variety of pictures based on the theme of arctic and antarctic. Local artist and jigsaw puzzle designer Mike Jupp judged the entries.

After a hard task, he chose the following artists as the best in their respective age groups: Rebecca Hyde (5), RAF Odiham Rainbows; Connie Edgington (7), 1st Pagham and Aldwick Brownie Pack; Chloe Worpell (11), 1st South Bersted Guides; and Megan Worboys (12), 1st South Bersted Guides.

Organiser Angela Purser, of Girlguiding Bognor west district, said: 'The weather clearly affected the event as there was torrential rain and thunderstorms in surrounding areas.

'Many of those who came expressed surprise that the event was still running but it was dry on Bognor seafront.'

Each of the winning entries has been forwarded to the national stage of the competition where the panel of judges will include representatives from the Royal Academy of Art. The winners will have their work showcased in a public exhibition.

The competition is in aid of the National Muscular Dystrophy campaign.
