Zachary Merton Hospital celebrates 75 years

THE 75th anniversary of Rustington’s Zachary Merton Hospital has been celebrated with a special church service and tea party.

The hospital’s League of Friends group organised the service, at Rustington Parish Church, and its members were joined by hospital staff, including matron Jo Thomas, and by Rustington Parish Council chairman Andy Cooper, Littlehampton mayor Alan Gammon and East Preston Parish Council chairman Carol Ellis.

The service gave thanks for the life of Zachary Merton, the founder of the hospital, and for the hospital’s role in the wider community.

More than 50 people attended the service and at the tea party afterwards Mr Cooper and League of Friends chairman Linda Beard cut an anniversary cake.

Organisers said the service was planned before NHS chiefs decided not to rebuild Littlehampton Hospital.
