Lewes Town Council marked this year's Mayor Making on Wednesday, May 27. Thanks are being given to outgoing Mayor, Cllr. Emily Clarke and the new Mayor, Cllr Adrian Ross is welcomed to the role. He serves alongside Cllr Matthew Bird as Deputy Mayor and Cllr Wendy Maples as second Deputy Mayor.
Uckfield Town Council appointed its Town Mayor, Deputy Town Mayor and Committee Chairs for the year 2026-2027 following its annual statutory meeting on Monday, May 18, 2026. After serving two years as Town Mayor, Cllr Karen Bedwell will complete a three year term in the role after being re-elected by her fellow councillors. In a similar vein, Cllr Spike Mayhew has been re-elected as Deputy Town Mayor to complete a three-year term. In their roles, Cllrs Bedwell and Mayhew serve as chair and vice-chair respectively, of full council meetings.
In Newhaven, Cllr Mark Wardle was elected at a full council meeting On May 19. His deputy is Cllr Krissy Taylor.
At the annual meeting of Polegate Town Council held on May 21, Cllr Stephen Shing was elected to serve as Mayor for the current civic year. Cllr Dan Dunbar was elected as Deputy Mayor. A council spokesperson said: "Since 1999 Stephen has been a well-known and highly dedicated servant of the community consistently working to support local residents and enhance the area for everyone."
In Hailsham, Cllr Chris Bryant has been re-elected as Town Mayor and Chair of the Council for a second consecutive year. He represents Magham Down ward and continues in the role following the council's annual meeting on May 20. Deputy Mayor and Vice Chair is Cllr Colin Mitchell.
The words Mayor and Major derive from the same Latin word, Magnus, meaning great. The office of Mayor, together with the Domesday Book and the feudal system, were brought to this country by the Normans.
