Ryan Byrne, 30, was spotted by officers behind the wheel of a Ford Kuga two days after he stole it from a property in Edgbaston, Birmingham, on January 17.
However, he failed to stop for police and took off at high speeds along residential streets and busy roads as he headed towards the city centre.
Dramatic footage shows Byrne dangerously overtaking other motorists and going the wrong way around a roundabout as he sped through the Winson Green area.
Eventually, the car came to a stop near to St Chads Queensway in the city centre after officers had earlier deployed a stinger in an attempt to stop it.
Byrne ran off following the three-mile chase but was found within minutes hiding in a nearby car park where he was arrested.
Byrne, of Bordesley Green, Birmingham, pleaded guilty to taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent, driving whilst disqualified, dangerous driving and failing to stop.
He was jailed for 15 months and banned from driving for three years at Birmingham Crown Court.
Detective Constable Rob Lattimer, from West Midlands Police, said: "Byrne completely disregarded the lives of other motorists and pedestrians by driving dangerously through residential roads and around the city centre.
“After his arrest, Byrne claimed he had just bought the car and even claimed he only ran off because he didn’t have a licence.
"Hopefully this acts as a deterrent to others that crimes like these will not be tolerated on our streets.
“The owner of the car thanked us on our Facebook page. We were happy to help and glad we could reunite her with her car."
