DOWN MEMORY LANE Racegoers threw their money at us

DOWN Memory Lane regular Doreen Sparkes of Chichester writes: Looking back to my childhood, the cenotaph at that time was in St Pancras (at the end of St James Road).

My friends and I would sit on the cenotaph in the afternoon when the racegoers were returning from the Goodwood races and they would throw money out to us.

A bookie would stay for race week with one of our neighbours and on Friday evening would sponsor a small race meeting for the children – all the children would get money but the winners would get extra.

The Goodwood race meeting was the highlight of the year for the local children. We found it very lucrative!
