Aiming to make points capital

WORTHING RFC AIM to turn their softest fixture of the season into a thrust towards ultimate promotion glory when promoted backmarkers Portsmouth come to Roundstone Lane this Saturday. It will not be a day for soft-pedalling or chilling out after the rigours of recent matches.

Centre Chris Yates, their former England A centre, said: "Our head of rugby Ian Davies has been blooding guys and there has been some squad rotation recently so injuries will affect us less. But on Saturday, the league's the league and I think Ian may well put out a full-strength side that's capable of scoring some points.

"Because if the second half of the season follows the pattern of the first, it may be us, London Scottish and Ealing all tied together at the top and points difference could decide the title and second place from third.

"We're hoping the weather's dry because rain would take some points off it."

The failure of Portsmouth and Guildford to make an impact this season after coming up from London 2 suggests the gap between the two divisions may have widened.

Worthing confirmed on Saturday their right to be regarded among the London 1 elite with a crushing victory away at improved Bishop's Stortford on Saturday. This extended their 100 per cent away record to five matches, which began with their 71-point welcome for Guildford on the opening day of the season.
