Angling with Roger Standen

THE Great Pond at Horam Manor continues to fish well for bags of carp to maggots and floating crust along with roach and rudd, while roach, rudd and tench made up the weight on House Pond.

Barry Brackley of Worthing fished Lagoon with Force 10 boilies to catch three mirror carp of 9lb, 9lb 2oz and 13lb 10oz, while the best fish recently was taken by Rhys Jones and weighed 18lb. Stuart Black of Heathfield fished with popped up luncheon meat during an evening on Banky Fork for a number of carp to 8lb.

Results of the Open Junior Competition at Horam were: 16-19 James Kemp 1lb 2oz, 12-15 Rebecca Axell 6lb 1oz, 6-11 Darren Keep 1lb 10oz.

At Passies Ponds P.A. coach James Ganger fished for just over two hours to catch over 100lb of mainly carp while pole fishing sweetcorn and pellets. Lots of bags of 60lb to 100lb were taken on the Method, waggler or pole with corn and maggots, though pellet worked better for the bigger fish. Another angler to do well was Dave Potter of Worthing who landed a 100lb of bream.

On the main lake carp to 17lb were taken along with lots of low double figured fish, but catches were mainly made up of roach, tench, smaller carp to 6lb and bream to 4lb. The match lake produced mainly catches of bream and carp.

The biggest carp from Tanyard Fisheries Specimen Lake 1 recently was a linear mirror of 27lb 10oz. It was taken by Frank Weeks of Kent who also landed fully scaled mirrors of 14lb and 17lb. On Specimen Lake 2 the biggest fish was a mirror of 29lb by Stephen Yards fishing with a chocolate flavoured boilie, while Charlie Weeks fishing for a weekend landed carp of 25lb 8oz and 22lb.

Grass carp catches featured well on Specimen Lake 3 with Derek Farmer taking fish of 22lb, 17lb 12oz and 19lb 8oz while stalking around on margins, but a mirror carp of 26lb 4oz was caught by Lionel Ward on popped-up sweetcorn.

Plenty of common carp to over 20lb were caught from Mallard lake Wintons Fishery along with catfish to 39lb. Boilies accounted for most of the carp, but halibut pellets and squid were the successful catfish baits.

One of the anglers to catch was Mark Cunnington the author of the highly successful book The Syndicate. He fished with boilies and landed two commons over 20lb. The best catfish of 39lb was taken by Chris Poole but his wife Brenda was pleased with a small one estimated at 5lb.
