Angmering’s Keelan gets first ATP world ranking point

ANGMERING-on-Sea Lawn Tennis Club’s Keelan Oakley has picked up his first ATP world ranking point already – less than a month after joining the professional circuit.

Oakley, 18, who only turned full-time at the start of September, has now joined a host of players on one world ranking point after collecting his first point last Tuesday when he beat Switzerland’s Yannis Liniger in the first round of the Aegon GB Pro Series event 7-6 6-3 in Wrexham.

In the second round, Oakley, who got a wildcard into the tournament, lost 6-4 6-1 to Daniel Evans, who has played for Great Britain in the Davis Cup and is ranked 342 in the world.

To get in the world rankings had been Oakley’s goal for the remainder of the year, so he is now setting new goals and said: “It’s amazing – I can’t believe it. That had been my goal for the rest of the year, so I’m really happy.”

On playing against several world-ranked players so far, Oakley said: “It’s been all right. I haven’t felt out of my depth at all but I’ve just got to keep playing at this level and try to get closer to winning tournaments.

“I’ll discuss new goals with my coach now and see what’s realistic.

“I’ll probably look to pick up a couple more points.”

Oakley headed out to Barcelona on Sunday, where he will be for the next two months.

He will be playing in three or four tournaments, looking to pick up more world ranking points, while training the rest of the time.
