It was a tremendous team effort by the Lewes youngsters, who did not produce one A winner but achieved their fine team performance with a stream of second and third placings.

Lewes s reigning county champion at both the high jump and discus throw, Jonathan Bennett, was squeezed into second place in both of these events. In the high jump Jonathan leapt to 1.42m to equal his personal best, which was the same height as that cleared by Chichester s Andrew Richardson, but he had to concede first place on count back.

In the discus throw Jonathan was a little below his best with 26.83m, but Horsham s Alex Dawkins pulled out a fine throw of 29.53m to set a new League record and indeed the best throw by any Sussex Under 13 this year.

There was another second placing in the A strings by Emily Woodall who chopped eight tenths of a second off her previous best to clock 13.1sec. And then she proved her versatility by finishing fifth in the 1,000 metres in 4min. 36.0sec.
