Bargains up for grabs

SUSSEX Horse Rescue held a Gala Closing Day last week offering an opportunity to see all the rescued horses, ponies and donkeys before the centre closes to the public for the winter.

The final public event will be a Tack Sale this coming Saturday (September 19) from 2pm onwards in the medieval hall and walled garden at the centre run by Pauline Grant at Hempstead Farm, Heampsted Lane, Uckfield when teas and snacks will be served.

There will be plenty of bargains, with riding boots, saddles, jackets, rugs, food bins and much more for sale at excellent prices with many items donated by supporters and by Stockley Trading of Littlehampton.

Money raised will be essential to the centre, which plays a vital part in rescuing equines of all ages and sizes, and where possible rehoming them on loan to suitable homes.

There is now a record number of 86 equines on the farm. Manager Linda McDonnell, along with staff and volunteers, has been working hard throughout the summer and still hopes there might be a chance to rehome more of them before winter.

New arrivals have included Astro, a frightened young native colt bought from a local horse sale where bidding started at 10.

"We could not abandon him and he was sold to us at a very low price. He is now safe for life, but many other sad eyes followed us as we left," said Pauline.
