Bargh ends great season on high

Cathy Bargh rounded-off another highly successful badminton season on a high note.

The Sedlescombe-based talent won the ladies’ doubles and was runner-up in the ladies’ singles at the Hampshire Senior Bronze Tournament in Winchester.

With a combined age of 95 at the final Badminton England Senior Bronze Circuit event of 2011/12, Bargh and Sara Addison won all three of their matches in a doubles competition played as a single round-robin group.

They saw off Christina Popova and Adele Woodhams 21-16, 21-10, edged out top seeds Hayley Duckett and Beulah Moody 21-18, 16-21, 21-18, and comfortably overcame Caroline Cooper and Nicole Jacobs 21-12, 21-9 to clinch the title.

With no time to bask in the glory of her doubles success, Bargh was soon back on court for a singles event initially split into three round-robin groups with the winners of each progressing to the knockout stage.

The 50-year-old England and Great Britain veterans’ international justified her top seeding by getting the better of Cooper 21-8, 21-9 and Leanne Debenham 21-12, 21-13 to top group A.

Bargh, a well-respected coach at Freedom Leisure Summerfields, received a bye in the semi-finals, but conceded the final to Duckett. See Friday’s Hastings and Battle Observers for the full article.
