Basketball: Cougars pounce to end Amazons' record

Bognor Amazons went into their visit to Brighton Cougars knowing it was a clash between unbeaten teams '“ but it was Amazons whose record went as they lost by seven points, 68-61.

Amazons took an early five-point lead in the first six minutes. Brilliant drives from Lucy Uncles and great outside shooting from Lara Whitaker put them further ahead by the end of the first quarter.

Cougars changed their defensive tactics to one-on-one defence and this proved harder to penetrate. They put a lot of pressure on Amazons’ ball-handlers and made it hard to find free players.

Lydia Stapely and Vicky Smith kept their cool and used their experience to direct the play and Amazons went 32-21 up by halfway.

They began the second half shattered after an intense first half. The third quarter didn’t go so well and Cougars used their speed and 12 players on the bench to fast-break against a tired Amazons team.

Fabulous rebounding and boxing-out from Michelle Denyer and Zsofie Vitanyi kept them in the game but they trailed by two points at the end of the third quarter.

Amazons used all eight of their players well, and every player scored.

Cougars pulled away a little in the last quarter with some strong outside shooting and despite Dannielle King and Jo Gabbs’ outstanding defence, Amazons ended up losing 68-61.

It was a great team effort and a strong performance from Amazons despite the final score.

The home leg against Cougars on on Tuesday, February 14 (8pm) at The Arena should be a cracker.
