Best of both worlds for race fans at Angmering

THE high-powered scaled-down Miniature American Stock Car Racing MASCAR stock cars and the vintage Southern Historic Saloon Stockcars (S.H.S.S.) provided a great day's racing action at Angmering (www.ovalraceclub.co.uk) on Sunday June 28th, with a field of well-turned out cars that showcased the best of modern stock car racing with the sights and sounds of cars from the sport's glory days.

With the temperature hitting 75f it was a tribute to the build quality of both the modern and the classic cars that none succumbed to the heat and all battled through two heats with no retirements, leaving a full grid ready to go for the silverware in the last race of the day.

The MASCAR machines thrilled the large crowd at the banked West Sussex circuit with some powerful races, involving door to door racing, incredible overtaking on the straights and plenty of US- stock car style spin outs in clouds of rubber smoke on Angmering's demanding pit bend turn.

The final was hotly contested by the visiting MASCAR drivers with the Sussex race fans being treated to some 'down home' American racing style on British soil. First under the chequered flag was 01, Russ Best, followed home by 11, Julie Standford and 17, Paul Patrick.

The veteran stock cars also had a tightly fought final with the win going to a very hard charging MG Magnette, driven in fine style by 356, Steve Hillier ahead of another vintage MG, piloted by 70, Paul Parsons and a Hillman Avenger driven by lady racer 646, Jasmine James.

There will be more modern and classic stock car racing at Angmering on July 19, with a large grid of cars lined up and plenty of old fashioned thrills and spills racing promised regardless of the age of the cars on the track.

Angmering is located just off the A280, between Worthing and Angmering. The gates open at 8am, with racing commencing at 11.30am. Adult admission is 10 kids, 10-14, 5, with kids under ten free.
