Bexhill lose their way

NAIVE batting by the lower order batsmen ultimately proved the downfall of Bexhill against Sussex Division Two leaders Lewes Priory.

The home side were on course to record maximum batting points when they lost their last five wickets for only 25 runs to be dimissed for 207.

Matthew Blackman, stand-in captain in place of the unavailable Steve Phillimore, said: "We did very well. It was just a little disappointing that we were rolled over at the end of the innings, because we should have got a few more runs and being bowled out early meant they had three more overs to bat"

Aussie Peter Lewis (49) and young Richard Harrison (48) put together a third wicket partnership of 87 and Mark Roughley weighed in with 39 to put Bexhill in line for a very big total.

Lewes star man Kashif Ibrahim then claimed four of the last five wickets which fell in quick succession, to finish with figures of 5-62.

The visitors got off to superb start in reply against a toothless Bexhill attack with Dave Luckes (84) and James Cruickshank (33) sharing an opening stand of 127.

The loss of three quick wickets left Lewes needing 69 for victory but any chance Bexhill might have had of pulling off a shock was lost by some dropped catches and a missed stumping.

Lewes eventually won by five wickets, with Blackman returning best bowling figures of 3-57.

Bexhill visit fellow strugglers Littlehampton on Saturday June 21.
