Bexhill storm into second place

BEXHILL United moved into second place in Sussex Division Three after powering to a very impressive 5-0 win away to mid-table Hurstpierpoint on Saturday.

The emphatic victory stretched their unbeaten run in the league to nine matches and only goal diffference now separates them from leaders Storrington, although the West Sussex side do have three games in hand.

Delighted manager Bill Trivett said: "It was an excellent display. We were definitely the better side on the day. It was a deserved 5-0 and we had one or two other chances as well."

Another solid display at the back meant Bexhill "were never really in danger" once they had finally broken the deadlock against a well-drilled outfit on 38 minutes through Mark Funnell, who got up highest to head home a long ball into the box from new signing Lee Fletcher.

The second arrived four minutes later and it was a virtual carbon copy of the opener, this time Dave Carey getting ahead of the goalkeeper to apply a finishing touch to another delivery from the debutant.

Soon after the restart Bexhill were out of sight as Wes Tate made amends for a shocking miss in the opening minutes by shooting across the goalkeeper from the right hand edge of the box and finding the bottom far corner of the net. Further goals from Carey, his 13th of the campaign, and Funnell completed the rout

Trivett, who had seen his side win 2-1 against top flight Eastbourne Town in a friendly the previous Tuesday, went on: "We've have been playing the same way in the last four games (the last three of which have been won without conceding a goal). We have gone from being a little bit naive to a side that is capable of beating anyone in this division."

Bexhill entertain bottom-of-the-table Upper Beeding on Saturday December 11, kick-off 1.45pm.
