Bexhill struggle in the field

BEXHILL remain alongside neighbours Sidley in the lower reaches of the Sussex Second Division after suffering a five-wicket defeat at home to Stirlands.

Another decent performance with the bat could not be followed up in the field as the visitors - inspired by a brutal 67 from overseas player Ajmal Saeed - swept to victory with plenty of overs to spare.

Bexhill captain Steve Phillimore said: "We played okay again, in fact we have played okay in our four games that have beaten the weather this season. But we just can't apply enough pressure with the ball - we can't stop the flow of runs."

The home side posted a competitive score of 186-6 on a slowish wicket thanks to good contributions from Richard May (51) and Bryce Turnbull (45) who shared a 90-run partnership for the fourth wicket after Bexhill had looked in some trouble at 45-3. Nick Hunt was the pick of the Stirlands attack with 3-39.

Bexhill got off to the perfect start when it came to defending their total, the impressive Jack Munro clean-bowling I. Bollam off the first ball of Stirlands' reply. Stirlands struggled for the next few overs and at 40-3 the match was there for the taking until Saeed pretty much settled matters by scoring at around eight an over during a devastating period of play.

Munro continued to bowl well and finished with figures of 4-58, a performance that meant he was the joint recipient with May of the East India Tandoori Man of the Match.

"Everyone bowled okay but just kept bowling four balls too frequently and their overseas player hit some fantastic shots even against the decent balls," Phillimore went on.

Bexhill will be looking to break their victory duck on Saturday June 12 when they travel to bottom-of-the-table Haywards Heath who have managed just 26 points from their opening five fixtures.
