Bognor back to their best for Evening League glory

The longstanding Evening League competition, which dates back to 1956, is contested between five local clubs - Bognor Regis, Cowdray Park, Ham Manor, Littlehampton and Worthing.

Teams of ten golfers from each club play foursomes match play, both home and away, on Wednesday evenings throughout the summer.

Having been rooted to the foot of the table after three of the eight fixtures, an unbeaten run saw Bognor soar up the table.

In the last two encounters of the season, Bognor secured the title by first visiting and defeating Cowdray Park 4½ - ½ and then in the very last match, a top-of-the-table clash at Ham Manor saw the visitors overcome their hosts 3½ - 1½ to move into top spot.

Whilst the top two teams were battling for honours, a tussle for bottom was played out at Worthing, with Littlehampton failing to avoid their retention of the dreaded spoon.

Bognor secured the title by one point and at the end-of-season presentation supper, held at Worthing, club captain Derek Dady was delighted to lift the Evening League Trophy.

The golfers who contributed to Bognor’s epic League win were John Cable, Rob Comins, Derek Dady, Paul Elliott, Gee Fenwick, Robbie Hughes, John Lampard, Clive Millett, Mike Oates, Richard Perry, Rob Redmond, Trevor Rich, Ron Stevens, Mark Watson, Simon Watts and Mark Willmer.
