Eleven-year-old Darren Rowles, having his second contest in a week, again won on points, this time against Charlie Holland of Guildford ABC.

Rowles attacked in his usual style of two-handed boxing but he didn’t have it all his wa as Holland, a taller boy, scored points through counter-punching – but it was the non-stop punching of Rowles which won him the contest on a unanimous decision.

Fifteen-year-old Yusif Shah lost on points against Connor O’Carroll, a boy he had previously beaten. In this contest Shah was forced on to his back leg with O’Carroll two-handed combinations of left and right crosses to win him a unanimous points verdict.

Last to box for the Bognor Boxing Club was 17-year-old Hasnen Akhtar, who featured in an all-action contest against Anthony Martin. Both boys were evenly matched but it was Akhtar who wanted the decision most.

He battled all through the contest against a taller opponent to win on a majority decision. His coach Charlie Martin commented: “Hasnen was so determined to win and with such a big heart; it was pleasing to see him get the decision.”

Rowles won the Des Porter trophy for the best Bognor boxer – he was presented with the silverware by Rotary’s Dr Malcolm Ridley. Akhtar won the Steve Clinton trophy for his true grit.

Bognor Boxing Club thanked Chris and Flat Pack Services for putting up the ring at short notice, Jarred Partridge the MC and Charlie Martin on his first ever match-making for the club, with all bouts evenly matched.
