Eastbourne Boxing Club travelled to Gym01 in Portsmouth for one Lightweight and Super-heavyweight bout recently.

First up was 57kg senior boxer, Brandon Spalding against the home team's Ali Quarayshi. In a frenetic first round, the home boxer stormed out of the blocks throwing strong overhand rights and left hooks trying to put everything in to his shots. Quarayshi was the aggressor but as the round progressed, Brandon was able to adapt, read the shots and find his range.

At the beginning of the second, Brandon was able to find his opponent with straight rear hands knocking his head back to score cleanly. Another well-picked right scored to force the referee to step in for standing count. During the mandatory 8, Quarayshi didn't raise his hands to the referee, forcing him to stop the bout. Brandon taking the bout with a second round stoppage.

"This was a really gratifying performance", said Coach Adam Haniver. "Brandon boxed beautifully the week before against a tough lad and adapted well to the two-handed onslaughts. In this bout, he was able to adjust to an opponent picking awkward big shots. One of our Club values is to adapt, Brandon shows he can adapt in the round. It's been a very promising start to his amateur career."

Last on was the clash of the super-heavyweights. Eastbourne's Glenn 'Glenngine' Derrington vs Gym01's Efehi Obazee. With around 215 kgs shared between them, it was going to be an exciting encounter.

Glenn stormed out throwing powerful combinations pushing the Portsmouth man back. a good start, yet the Pompey man was able to pick some well timed rearhands keeping Glenn at bay. The tide turned slightly in the second round as Obazee seemed to get the rocket from his corner, working harder and putting his shots together taking the 2nd. Rallying, the Eastbourne man out his foot on the pedal and pushed back Obazee with a strong jab and well timed uppercuts. Glenn forced three standing counts in an unrelenting series of attacks before the referee waved it off half way through the third round.

"Glenn was disappointed on our home show last week as he didnt box to his potential.' Said Coach Paul Hipperson. 'We put the question to him whether he wanted to box a week later, he instantly replied, yes. Glenn should be proud of how he responded as many would have turned down the opportunity after a loss. He performed well and showed great self-control."
