The St Leonards cueman missed out on a second semi-final appearance at the York Barbican in three years after being beaten 6-1 by 2011 champion Judd Trump.

Davis did very little wrong despite the scoreline, but world number 11 Trump was in scintillating form as he raced through in quick time to set up a last four tie against Marco Fu or Stephen Maguire.

The first two frames followed a similar pattern with 19th-ranked Davis getting in first only for Trump to come back with frame-winning clearances. Davis made runs of 48 and 50, but Trump replied with breaks of 72 and 58.

Although 42-year-old Davis got himself on the scoreboard by winning frame three thanks to a 58, he only scored one point in the next three frames as runs of 59, 77 and 65 gave Trump a 5-1 advantage.

Trump had his sights set on a maximum in the next until breaking down on 64, at which point he had amassed 279 points without reply. Davis hit back with a 68 only to leave a tricky final black in the jaws of the pocket and Trump couldn’t miss.

It’s still been a very decent tournament for Davis, who saw off James Cahill 6-2, Joe Perry 6-5 (from 5-3 down), Liam Highfield 6-4 and Jak Jones 6-2 to reach his second full ranking event quarter-final of the season.
