Breaking news: Davis wins, Robertson beaten in China

Mark Davis was a 5-3 winner over Kyren Wilson, but Jimmy Robertson lost out by the same score against Dominic Dale in round one of the season’s penultimate ranking event.

Davis, the world number 19 from St Leonards, got off to a flying start against 61st-ranked Wilson by winning the opening three frames. After edging a fairly tight opener, Davis conceded only four points in the next two and knocked in a break of 120 in the third.

A 97 in frame four, however, got Wilson up and running, and he won the next on the colours to make it 3-2. Davis comfortably clinched the sixth to lead 4-2 and although Wilson took the seventh to stay alive, Davis sealed victory in the eighth without conceding a point.

Davis, 42, has reached the quarter-finals in each of the last three tournaments and he could face home favourite Ding Junhui in round two on Wednesday - if the world number four wins his first round tie against Marcus Campbell this afternoon.

Bexhill-based Robertson failed to score a point in the opening frame, which Dale sealed with a break of 76, but recovered from 62 points behind to win a high scoring second frame in which both players gained 16 points in fouls.

World number 32 Dale came through a lengthy third frame to lead 2-1 only for 44th-ranked Robertson to clinch the fourth with a best run of 41 and the fifth - thanks largely to a 53 - for a 3-2 lead.

Welsh potter Dale reeled off the next three frames, however, to clinch victory. He levelled at 3-3 thanks largely to a break of 66 at the start of frame six and confirmed his place in round two with a 103 in frame eight.
